Tango Peninsula & the Sea of Japan

A private three-day ride from Kameoka to the Sea of Japan: thatched villages, Amanohashidate, the boathouses of Ine and the onsen town of Kinosaki.

  • 3 days
  • 450 km
  • Easy
  • ¥240,000 per person

Kyoto's other coast. In three days we ride from the rental shop in Kameoka to the Sea of Japan, through thatched-roof villages, past one of Japan's three most celebrated views and around the cliffs and fishing harbours of the Tango Peninsula, ending at the hot spring town of Kinosaki.

This is a private tour: just your group of up to four riders and your guide. Days are short, at 120 to 170 km, leaving plenty of time to stop, walk and eat. You'll spend the first night by Amanohashidate, with sunset over the bay, see Ine's boathouses from the water the next morning, and spend the second night in a ryokan at Kinosaki Onsen.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Kameoka to Miyama and Amanohashidate

Meet at the rental shop in Kameoka (or Kyoto) for a bike briefing, then head north into the hills on quiet country roads to Miyama, a village of dozens of thatched-roof farmhouses beside the Yura River. Continue to the Sea of Japan and Amanohashidate, a 3.6 km pine-covered sandbar counted among Japan's three most scenic views; take the chairlift to Kasamatsu Park and look at it upside down between your legs, as tradition demands. Watch the sunset over the bay, then spend the night at an onsen hotel by Amanohashidate. About 120 km.

  2. Day 2

Ine and the Tango Peninsula to Kinosaki Onsen

A short coastal ride to Ine, a fishing village of around 230 wooden boathouses built right over the water. Take a boat trip around Ine Bay for the classic view of the funaya from the sea, and stop for coffee or an early lunch by the water. Then ride the coastal Route 178 around the tip of the peninsula: the lighthouse at Kyogamisaki, the northernmost point of Kyoto Prefecture, the giant basalt column of Tateiwa, and the 'singing sand' beach of Kotohikihama. Cross into Hyogo and arrive at Kinosaki Onsen, a willow-lined canal town where guests stroll between seven public bathhouses in yukata and wooden sandals. Night in a ryokan with a seafood dinner. About 155 km.

  3. Day 3

Izushi and Tamba-Sasayama back to Kameoka

A morning bath, then a short ride to Izushi, a small castle town known for its clock tower and plates of hand-made soba. Through the hills of Tamba to Sasayama, with its castle ruins, old merchant street and famous black soybeans, then over the pass on Route 372 back to Kameoka. Return the bikes by mid-afternoon.
